«Moby Dick» (1851) is one of literary history’s great failures. Herman Melville’s great novel received poor reviews, it sold nothing, and was the beginning of the end of his short career as a writer.

After a few years he stopped writing completely and took a job as a customs inspector. Melville himself called «Moby Dick» an evil book. Today, the book is considered a classic and one of the great American novels.
