Metamodernism – an introduction by Timotheus Vermeulen
Extended program Seminar
Metamodernism often comes up in conversations about the development of today's art and cultural expression. The term is an attempt to put into words a tendency in art where sincerity, grand narratives, hope and truth are back on the agenda at the same time as the irony, deconstruction and relativism of postmodernism are still present. How does art respond to a time dominated by crises and dystopias?
Timotheus Vermeulen has been writing about the term from an early stage, and is now visiting Black Box teater to give us an introduction. Metamodernism has been an active idea in the work on the performance Juanitas (Berstad/Helgebostad/Mariblanca), which there is an opportunity to see after the introduction.
Timotheus Vermeulen is a professor of media, culture and society at the University of Oslo, Norway. He is co-founder of the now defunct webzine Notes on Metamodernism, co-editor of the book series Studies in Metamodernism, a cultural and concept consultant, and a regular contributor to public discourse.
The introduction is free and will be held in English.
