The point of departure for Trajal Harrell’s latest performance was his selection as ‘Dancer of the Year’ by Tanz Magazin in 2018. The prize triggered a reflection of (self)worth and (self)representation. It resulted into this full-length solo project, the first one in a while, that investigates what Harrell means to dance, and what dance means to him. In an intimate setting, Harrell offers his dance to us, like a gift. He shares the labor and revisits the layers and materials of previous performances, with an air of fragility, beauty, vulnerability and exhaustion.
“It’s one thing to be named “Dancer of the Year”; it’s something entirely different to try and make something of it. Dancer of the Year as a dance is my way of drawing attention to representation. I am far from the perfect ballerina, like my female Dancer of the Year. I’m something else.” – Trajal Harrell
Trajal Harrell ́s work borrows equally from art and dance history, fashion, pop culture, and the avant-garde. Harrell, one of the most important choreographer of his generation, has visited Black Box teater several times: in 2018 with Caen, Amour and in 2014 with (M)imosa/Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at The Judson Church (M) in which he contrasted the tradition of Voguing that emerged from the queer African and Latin American club culture in Harlem, with that of the early postmodernists.
